  • Going on a Shape Hunt

Shapes are all around us!  During group time in preschool today, we discovered a secret shape hidden under our carpet circle then searched the classroom to find its match,  then we sorted them on our shape mats.  What a fun way to explore squares, ovals, diamonds, circles, and triangles.  After our hunt, we read the book Mouse Shapes and watched as the little mice used a variety of shapes to create different pictures, then we used our own creativity to create our own shape pictures!

  • Earth Day Addition

We have been working hard this month on our addition math study unit…we have used many different manipulatives such as marbles and unifix cubes to learned the fundamentals of addition.  According to learning theory based on psychologist Jean Piaget’s research, children are active learners who master math concepts by progressing through three levels of knowledge–concrete, pictorial, and abstract. When children use manipulatives it allows them to explore addition at the concrete level. When students manipulate objects to solve addition problems, they are taking the first steps toward building understanding and internalizing math processes and procedures.  They will then use the base knowledge to develop more sophisticated problem-solving strategies in the future.

  • Speckled Frogs

At group time we read “Five Little Speckled Frogs”

We counted frogs, for one-to-one correspondence, as the toddlers placed them upon a log.

We practiced one to one correspondence in our Math Study group today as well as number recognition review.  These are important foundational skills we will need for the start of our Kindergarten year!
