Starting the year off learning all about Greenland! Our Arctic themed classroom has all kinds of fun centers for the preschoolers to explore. Here is a peek at how our classroom centers are strengthening those fine motor muscles this month:
Welcome back!! It was great to see everyone again! On Monday (and today) during group, the children had to match the baby animal to its mother. We discussed the different names for each baby animal (a baby sheep is called a “lamb”, a baby horse is called a “foal”, etc.) The children also had fun “washing” animals in a tray of water and soap.

On Monday in our Early 3’s class, we started off the day by having the children find their names then use a stamper to follow the lines/curves of each letter in their names. During group time, we reviewed our rules and procedures for our classroom. During small groups, the children worked on two different art show projects. The third group made “N” is for “Night” by putting stars and a moon on a black cut out of an “N”.

We began our study of Greenland today…we learned that Greenland is an island (and what an island is), that many different kinds of animals live in Greenland even during the cold winter months, and most importantly…THERE ARE NO PENGUINS IN GREENLAND!
Being able to auditorily recognize rhyming words is an integral part of a child’s phonemic awareness.  Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds-phonemes–in spoken words. Phonemic awareness is important because it improves students’ word reading and comprehension while helping students learn to spell.
Incorporating rhyming and various sound activities at home can help your child develop a strong sense of phonemic awareness. These can be simple activities that you can do together in the car on the way to school or to the grocery! Have fun!
