  • Why is a Giant Panda so oily?

We have been talking about the different traits of the Giant Panda of China.  To the touch, their fur feels oily. This oily protective coating helps protects giant pandas from the cool and damp climate in which the bear lives.

Today we colored the black patches of fur with oil pastels and then blended it with our fingers and oil.

  • Why is Yoga important for kids?

Yoga at an early age encourages self-esteem and body awareness with a physical activity that’s noncompetitive. Fostering cooperation and compassion—instead of opposition—is a great gift to give our children.

Children derive enormous benefits from yoga. Physically, it enhances their flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness. In addition, their concentration and sense of calmness and relaxation improves.

  • Nocturnal Animals: RACCOONS!

We continued our study of nocturnal animals by learning about raccoons! To go along with our theme, we made our very own raccoon masks! One of my objectives for the children this month is using a glue stick…so this project involved a LOT of glue! This project helped them build their fine motor skills, practice eye-hand coordination, and follow step-by-step directions. Check out the fun we had making them and using them!

  • Autumn Time

For the month of October, we’re talking about the season change (leaves changing colors, pumpkin patches, temperature changes and much more).  In this weeks discovery tub, the toddlers found leaves, pinecones, acorns, apples, cinnamon sticks, pumpkins and gourds. Take a look to see how much fun we had finding these items together.

  • Building and Illustrating a Sentence

We have been learning that letters make words and words make sentences.  After reading our books the students built and illustrated their own sentence in reading groups.  We’ve discovered in the books that we read, that the illustrator always match their drawings to the words (sentences) on the page.  What wonderful illustrators we have in our classroom.

  • The Apple Pie Tree

We had so many delicious apples left over from yesterday’s sorting activity we decided to put them to good use.  After reading the book, The Apple Pie Tree by Zoe Hall the students sliced apples, followed a recipe and made their own Apple Crisp.  After cooking their delicious creations, the children enjoyed them as a snack!  Cooking with children is a wonderful way to practice following directions, build basic math skills. sequencing, hand-eye coordination, and building fine motor muscles.
