During group time, the boys and girls went hunting in Ms. Laurel’s tub for things that live in a pond. They found snakes, turtles, fish and frogs!
Throughout the month of May we are learning about oceans and ponds. We started our unit with learning all about oceans and the animals that live in oceans. We finished learning about our last letter in the alphabet- Z!
Creating an ocean scene at the block center. The block center contains loose parts including pool noodles, blocks, animals, and seaweed that allow children to use their imagination and build.
This month we have the light table in our room. They can use their imagination and build with the blocks or try to recreate one of the structures in a picture.
In our sensory tub this month we have sand, shovels, buckets, and shells that allow children to play, scoop and build.
In small groups, we worked on our fine motor skills and placed marbles onto a suction cup fish.
We went fishing for number fish in small groups. We used magnetic fishing poles to catch a fish and read the number and color on the fish.
Some more block center creations!
We used circle stickers to make the letter Z.
We practiced writing to letter Z in all different sizes!
The boys and girls had a blast fishing with Ms. Laurel today! This was such a fun and interactive way for the children to review their colors and shapes. The boys and girls were given a chance to go fishing, then they told the other children what color their fish was and what shape it had on it. They all did a great job recognizing their shapes and colors!
May starts our Ocean Habitat study and so we kicked it off this week with a fun exploration day in K-Prep! We rotated through four different stations focused on sensory exploration, sight word study, art, and some addition practice!
We got to explore in a squishy sensory tub filled with water beads and ocean animals! We had so much fun playing in this station!
We got to dig through tubs of seashells on a search for sight words! Once we found them, we wrote them in the correct column based on the number of letters in the word.
For our art activity, we stamped scales onto our fish using celery stalks!
And lastly, to practice our addition skills, we played fishy addition and used goldfish crackers to help us count!

This week in small groups we focused on the number 10, letter formation, and developing fine motor skills. Since our theme this month was garden, we read the very hungry caterpillar and then made finger print caterpillars by counting to 10. We also focused on the letters X and Y and how to form and write them. We wrote the letters with markers and formed them using playdoh to work on both fine motor and letter building.
The K Prep class has been learning about sound this month…vibrations, pitch, and sound waves to name a few.
-The students learned that sounds are made from vibrations. They were able to see how this works first hand! We put plastic wrap on a glass bowl and added some sugar crystals on top. We found that if we talked very closely to the sugar, it would start moving!
-To explore high and low pitch, we made our own songs using water glasses. We even wrote our own music and each played our song to the class!
-We made our own telephones to show how sound waves work!
We have been exploring and learning all about light in the K Prep classroom. We made our own rainbows with water, light and a mirror. We experimented with the meaning of translucent and non translucent. We tested out some of our theories by pointing a flashlight at the different objects to see if the light shined through! We also explored shadows and how they move as the light moves. We concluded our exploration by going outside to trace our friends’ shadow on a beautiful sunny day.
Ms. Joanie came to class for music and brought a special friend….ELMO! The boys and girls love Ms. Joanie’s silly Elmo voice! She played her guitar and sang songs while the boys and girls played their sticks. Then Ms. Joanie sang everyone’s favorite song, We Are The Dinosaurs! The children had so much fun singing and dancing.
