Even though our snow has melted, that doesn’t keep us from building our own snowman!  Today, we made paper mache snowmen.  Mixing equal parts water and flour, the children got ooey gooey by slathering our balloon snowmen with pasty newspaper.  This two-part project has a ways to go.  Next Thursday, we will get to decorate the snowmen by getting ooey gooey again when making them white (shaving cream anyone?!), and topping them off with their proper decorations.  We can’t wait to to see the finished product!

Lighthouse Youth Services is a multi-service, non-profit organization that provides help and resources for teens, young adults and parents in need.  The Help Me Grow Program provides support and service coordination for families of infants and toddlers who are at risk for, or are experiencing, developmental delays.  Help Me Grow is designed to help first time parents who are pregnant or whose children are birth to three years old, and who meet the eligibility criteria, which may include certain medical diagnoses or developmental delay.  Help Me Grow assists parents in helping their children grow and learn by facilitating their children’s development and keeping them safe and healthy.

Our theme is “Help Me To Grow” and this idea came about because Lynn and Manda wanted to start a project that would help teach the children at Creative Tots about service and helping others.  Like all great ideas, this one grew from being a simple service project into a fun event that will enable children and their families to participate.  We like this idea because it was a way to involve the entire Creative Tots community in supporting our children’s efforts to help others.  And, we love the Help Me Grow program at Lighthouse Youth Services because it is helping parents help their children grow up strong and healthy – just like all of us at Creative Tots are doing for our own children!

We watched today as an Inuit boy learned how to build his first igloo.  We also read the book, Inside an Igloo and learned why igloos have a small tunnel as an entrance.  Ask your them why!

Our focus this week is word families.  We are beginning to put the sounds and sight words together that we have been learning over the past few months…the next step in becoming even better readers!

New centers means new ways to learn our letters, letter sounds, practice our numbers, one-to-one correspondence, patterning and shapes.  Today, the children learned how to play the new games and activities that are in our centers.  They were all eager to try something new!

We began our study of the wonderful world of Greenland this week.  It is an amazingly unique environment full of interesting creatures that we will be learning about throughout the month on January.

On the first day back we read Polar Bear Polar Bear What Do You Hear? By Bill Martin Jr. The children reenacted the book by playing with different arctic animals.

Getting back into the swing of things means reviewing old routines and practicing procedures.  For our small groups, the boys and girls learned new games and activities that are available to them in our centers.  Teaching them how the activities and games work ensures that the children are playing the game/activity the correctly, ultimately gaining the educational purpose it is designed for.  A new month means new centers, which means new ways to learn!
