Today the Toddlers read “Mrs. Wishy Washy” during group time. The children like to interact and make washing sounds as the animals get baths! During art, the boys and girls used their fine motor skills to grasp the stampers as well as their hand and eye coordination to place the “mud” on the pigs. We also reviewed the colors pink and brown.
“Oh, lovely mud,” said the pig and he rolled in it!
Today the toddlers worked on the concept of front/back and forward/backward. We read the story “Freight Train” by Donald Crews. While listening to the story, the boys and girls decided which was the front and back of the train. They did a great job identifying all of the colors of the train cars. After the story, the children made their own train and practiced walking forward and backward. They did a great job using gentle hands and following directions!
Mrs. Wishy-Washy has been a big hit in the Early 3s room. Today we made the duck all muddy while practicing our fine motor skills with sponges.

This week in Early 3s we are focusing on Math. The students watched Ten Little Numbers on the ipad during small groups. This is a fun way to practice numbers and counting at home.
Next the children practiced counting. We worked on one-to-one correspondence by placing stickers in boxes for each number.
We practiced one-to-one correspondence by matching bears to dotted cards during small groups today as well. This was a fun activity for color recognition and counting.
Reading to Toddlers lays the foundation for later independent reading. Not only does reading help develop speech skills and build on vocabulary, it also helps with logical thinking and enhanced concentration. Reading with your child is a nurturing experience where you can sit and have quality quiet time with your child. Toddlers are extremely interested in books. They enjoy looking at pictures and turing the pages. Allow time to read to your child everyday and you will be amazed how much they pick up from shape recognition to letter sounds. This morning in preschool we practiced lots of skills. We worked on our listening and direction following skills while practicing color recognition, letter recognition, and letter sounds. The preschoolers were instructed to color all the P’s purple, the B’s blue, and the R’s red.
The preschoolers have been working very hard on their crayon grip. What quick learners they are!
Practicing letter sounds is so easy, just ask your preschooler what the first sound of a word is during everyday activities. Letter sounds are a strong foundation for reading. Any type of exposure and practice is helpful.
This week in Early 3s its been all about names. On Friday during small groups name recognition took things to a new level. We practiced our fine motor muscles while pinching clips. This is great practice for our fingers and classroom routines. At our centers in the room there are signs with clothespins (clips) for the number of friends allowed to play there. This is a big piece of independence in the Early 3s program. By practicing the action of pinching a clip in multiple ways the students are set up for success when trying to use them independently.
The letter R was introduced this week in preschool. We practiced writing the letter R on the Smartboard while strengthening our fine motor muscles.

Today the Toddlers had a blast digging in the sandbox outside! Sand play promotes physical development. Large muscle skills develop as children dig, pour, and scoop sand. Eye-hand coordination and small muscle control improve as children manipulate sand play tools such as shovels and buckets. Sand play also promotes social skills such as sharing and working together. Exploring in the sandbox is considered open ended play which allows the child to use their imagination and play in any direction that they might like. Watch as the children build on these developmental skills!
