We’ve been reading this wonderful Eric Carle Book during our Arctic theme this month. The children love the repetitive language and rhythmic text. By day two they were reading right along with us! Reading books with rhyme and predictable text helps children begin to understand story structure. They are able to figure out what is coming next and better understand difficult vocabulary.
In order to help prepare children for writing and other activities that require small movements in the hands, we must first build the small muscles in the hands and fingers. There are many activities that help build these muscles. Today we used small spoons to transfer “snowballs” from bowls into our sorting trays.
As we continue our theme about the arctic and arctic animals we read “Hello Arctic”. The children discovered alot of the different animals and all of the snow! We were so inspired we de
cided to make our own snow with shaving cream and glue!
On the first day back we read Polar Bear Polar Bear What Do You Hear? By Bill Martin Jr. The children reenacted the book by playing with different arctic animals.
Fingerplays help children to develop their cognitive small motor, memory, and language skills.
Fingerplays also offer a way to learn about poetry, which is an extremely valuable and delightful experience for children. The beauty of fingerplays is that they can either soothe and calm children or stimulate their intellect and imagination.
Reinacting real life in the dramatic play area is very helpful in strengthening socialization skills and respecting others.
Blocks come in different shapes, sizes and materials.
Building with blocks not only provides opportunities to create, cooperate and communicate but it also promotes social learning as children work together to share materials, space and ideas!
We build the blocks up……
and knock them down!
