  • Reading and Writing Workshop in K Prep

We read the book, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, during reading and writing workshop this week.  Our focus was learning about where the story took place, or the setting.  We discovered that this story took place in the habitat that we have been studying this month, the forest!  After reading it together, we used picture cards to retell the story, step by step.  After retelling the story, we created an illustration of the setting.  The students have been learning about what good illustrators do and how to create a more interesting picture by adding details, colors and words. They participated in their first Author’s Chair experience.  Author’s chair is a chance for students to share their work with the class.   They did an amazing job.  We have quite a few budding illustrators!

We will be focusing on retelling for the remainder of the month, during our reading workshops.  This is a great thing to do with your child after reading each day.  A simple retell (or what happened at the beginning, middle and end) of the story, helps build comprehension and teaches our children to become active readers.

Children become readers on the laps of their parents!

  • Spiders

This week we began a “spider” theme! In small groups today, we practiced our fine motor skills as we used tongs to put pom-poms onto spiders. We also practiced our writing skills by tracing straight, slanted, and curved lines leading to a spider.

During our group time, we watched a video of how a spider spins her web. We talked about the “claw hook” on the spider’s back legs, which is used in the web-spinning process. You can watch the video we watched by clicking on this link:

The month of October our color is ORANGE! Today during art we painted with oranges instead of paint brushes. The boys and girls had a lot of fun making prints with the oranges in orange paint!

  • Preschool Science Day: The Pond Habitat

    1 2

Pond water was murky and cloudy and gross!

    3

What is all that green stuff floating around? Algae!

    4 5 6

Cat tails were fun to break open.  They are so soft and fuzzy.

    7 8

We learned how lily pads are covered with a waxy coating, like wax paper, that’s why they float!

    9

Time to make our very own Pond Habitat!  First the water, then the algae, then the cat tails!

  • Budding Authors and Illustrators!

We became authors and illustrators today during small groups.  The students came up with a sentence and illustration that they would add to I Jump (our reading group book  for the week) if we were the authors and illustrators.  The students learned that the text must match the illustration and that the dot at the end of each sentence is called a period! • We are all alike….We are all different

During group time we are reading We are all alike…We are all different by the Cheltenham Elementary School Kindergartners. Today we talked about how we are all alike because we all have eyes but we are also different because are eyes are different colors. The children had a chance to come up to the board and put their name next to brown eyes, green eyes or blue eyes.

  • K Prep Sight Word Introduction and Reading Groups Began Today!

Reading groups began in K Prep today!  Our very first sight words were introduced and we practiced reading them in our very first reader…I Jump by Bruce Larkin.  We will continue reading these books for the remainder of the week and practice recognizing our first sight words of the year.  New sight words are introduced every Monday/Tuesday.  Don’t forget, if you miss a day in K Prep, you miss a lot!

  • Preschool Science Day: Red-eared Slider Turtle

    1

With our study of Ponds well under way, it was time to learn about a turtle!!!

    2 3 4

The Red-eared Slider Turtle made a trip to our classroom.  They don’t have any teeth or saliva.  Their shells are different than a Painted Turtle.

    6

    “I see it’s red ears!!!”

    7 8 9 10

We drew a big circle to make our turtle’s shell.

    11 12 13

We are so excited to take home out Red-eared Slider.  Be sure to ask your kiddos some fun facts!
