  • Match the Turkey Feathers!

This afternoon Jessica was practicing one of the science center activities with color matching.  For this activity she had to use the clothes pins to match the turkeys feathers.  This is not only a great activity for color matching, but it is wonderful for practicing those fine motor skills!  marble painting 064

  • Madeira Fire Department Visited on Wednesday

The Madeira fire department came to visit us on Wednesday and the kids just LOVED IT!  The firemen taught us alot of about fire safety.  They taught us what to do if:  1)we find a box of matches, 2) our clothes catch on fire, 3) what to do if we wake up to a fire alarm in the house, 4) when and when NOT to call 911, 5)  to let the firemen get any pets out of a house on fire and NEVER stop to bring toys with them  6)  how smoke rises and how we should always crawl out of a burning house.

We watched as a firemen put on each piece of gear including air tanks, hood and mask.  We gave the fireman high five as we learned never to be afraid of a fireman if he came to help us in an emergency.  Some of the children were a little unsure of the fireman and how funny his voice sounded when he talked through his speaker in his mask.  This was a wonderful experience for the kids to help them feel more comfortable.

After our special group time with the firemen, they took us all outside and showed us each part of their trucks.  The afternoon class got to see an aerial ladder truck and an ambulance!  Both classes got to get inside the fire truck and walk through!  The kids were amazed at this experience and were FULL of questions!

  • Our Friend Mr. Scarecrow

This afternoon during group time, we used our friend Mr. Scarecrow to talk about shapes!  The kids each had a turn to come up to the scarecrow and choose a shape from his clothes.  We talked about the color and shape that each child was holding.

  • The smell of Oranges…

This month we are focusing on learning the color orange.  Today at the morning table we set out orange play dough.  To add some fun to this activity, we added a few special drops of orange extract to our play dough to make it smell like oranges!  The kids loved to use the eye dropper and were amazed by the smell of their play dough!

  • Spooky Scissor Skills

IMG_2193 The Preschool class had a great time today working together to make our class pumpkin and bat, but it was no easy task! We had one very large white pumpkin and an oversized white bat that needed coloring in, however we didn’t use crayons, markers, or paint for this job! We got out our scissor and started snipping away at strips of orange and black paper. Each time we made a snip with our scissors we were able to add a small piece of color to our pumpkin and bat. Leaving a patch of white was out of the question, so the preschoolers put their developing fine motor skills to the test and worked very hard at getting the color just right. The PreK class was happy to help in finishing up during their afternoon class. It was a TEAM effort by all and we had a great time making them!

  • Rainbow Writing Sight Words

We practiced our sight words today along with writing by rainbow writing the sight words in our weekly reading group book along with two from last week’s book.  The book we have been reading this week is a nonfiction book called, Birds by Bruce Larkin.  The book series we use in our reading curriculum has also been made available to parents for purchase through the creator of the curriculum.  If you click on the picture of the book you will be taken to the website.
