  • Exploring Geometry

The goal of geometry in an early childhood classroom is to train a child’s mind, hands and senses to understand the properties of shapes, sizes, relative proportions etc so that they can help build the intellect and connected memory for future use.

  • Sorting by Animal Habitat

We combined science with math today and sorted our classroom animals by the type of habitat they live in.  We will begin talking about the desert habitat next month as we explore ancient and current day Egypt.

  • Will You be Mine?

The Early 3’s had a fun filled Valentines Day this week! We talked about how Valentines Day is a day to tell all the people you care about how much you love them. The children took turns at group time talking about who they loved! The children talked about loving their mommies, daddies, pets, and friends! During small groups we went on to decorate our valentine bags using stickers and to make special valentines for our parents.

  • Cylinder, Cube, Sphere and Cone…these are the 3D Shapes we know!

We continued our study of 3D objects with an interactive smartboard game.  Click on the photo below to play the game with your child!  This site has many fun math games that correlate to what we are learning in the classroom.

We have also been singing a 3D shapes song during group time to help us remember the names of the 3D shapes.  The video is below to practice at home!

    Happy Playing!

  • Around, up, and down…the importance of proper letter formation

Proper letter formation and effective pencil grasp are important to promote successful writing.

Beginning writers need instruction in letter formation. They need practice to develop the motor memory that influences speed and efficiency in completing written tasks.

Many children who are not instructed in proper letter formation acquire letter formation habits that are not helpful to an easy transition from a printing style to a cursive style. Getting rid of bad habits requires enormous conscious effort.  It is an easier task to train the brain properly than to retrain the brain once bad habits are formed.

We focused on the circular letters today with an emphasis on which direction to create the circle (counter-clockwise).  Learning to create these circular letters correctly helps children transition seamlessly into cursive writing in their elementary years.

  • What Can You Build with 100 Legos?

Airplanes…rocketships…battleships…houses!  The students used their creativity and their 100 legos to build something they created in their imagination.  After building their creation, students drew a sketch of what they created and labeled it.  We have some very creative architechs among us!
