  • “Tow” Much Fun: Transportation!

February was all about things that “go”! We learned about trains, cars, boats and airplanes. We created fun crafts around those different modes of transportation. Some of the crafts focused on color or name recognition, while others focused on fine motor skills, such as using stickers or tape to decorate cars and roads! Following directions is also something we practice at each small group time. Check out below some of our learners hard at work, creating!

    Name trains:

Hands on car activities! Driving our cars on a “road”, washing our cars, and parking our cars in their colored parking lots!

  • Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

Our focus of transportation has been fun this month in the toddler room!

    R is for Road

Lacing and sorting with all types of transportation manipulatives help toddlers work on their fine motor skills.

We had discussion of all different types of transportation and watched a video of hot air balloons taking flight.  This inspired a hot air balloon craft.  Our centers have included all types of transportation manipulatives including sailboats with shape locking sails.

We had fun with a name building choo choo train.  We discussed letters and colors and worked on name recognition.

We had fun with a paint sensory experience using the truck wheels to make tracks with the paint.

Dobber paints and stickers on transportation sheets help toddlers with one to one correspondence, color recognition, and fine motor skills.

Sorting by color, shape and size are objectives in the toddler room.

Our toddler class took a pretend flight on Creative Tots airlines.  We practiced buckling our seat belts and staying seated during the “flight”.  The flight attendants passed out a special snack to enjoy while looking out the windows at the ground below.

  • Things That GO!

During the month of February, we talked about transportation and things that take us all over the world! We learned about trains, cars, bicycles, hot air balloons, and airplanes. We even took an imaginary airplane to the beach!

Ms. Kristen was the pilot of our plane, while Ms. Melanie and Ms. Kelsey were the flight attendants. They even got a snack and drink on the flight 😉

We also learned all about what the red, yellow, and green lights stand for! We practiced learning these colors and their meanings by tossing matching bean bags with the color on the “stop light”

Our alphabet page for our transportation theme was “R” is for “road”! The toddlers practiced their fine motor skills by peeling off stickers, and sticking them onto the “road” made out of the letter R!

We also had a fun sensory activity with our cars, having a pretend car wash in our sensory bins.

And because you can never do too many color sorting activities, we used miniature modes of transportation to sort onto our color mats!

  • All Aboard!

As September comes to an end, so does our transportation theme.  What better way to end our theme than with trains?  Everyone in class really enjoyed our stories “Freight Train” and “I Love Trains!” Later we created our own train! We had so much fun chugging along the track. We also watched a short video called, “The Train Colors Song.”  You can check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwlMvE8qeoY.

Inside the classroom we have lots of trains to play with.
