The second issue is in regards to cooperation and compliance. This, of course, is a whole different ball game. Your little one may be processing the directions you gave them just fine, but not choosing to act on them. I\u2019m going to give you some strategies to (hopefully) increase cooperation as well!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"margin-top: 1.833em;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.611em;margin-left: 0px;font-weight: normal;font-size: 1.286em;line-height: 1.222em;text-align: center;padding: 0px\"><span style=\"color: #008000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Century Gothic';font-size: small\"><span>Fun Ways to Practice Listening Skills<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 1.571em;margin-left: 1.571em;padding: 0px\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"color: #000000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Century Gothic';font-size: small\"><span>Start with something simple: Talk with your child a lot. Have conversations. Interview each other. Tell jokes. Talk, talk, talk.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"color: #000000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Century Gothic';font-size: small\"><span>Read and read and then read some more. Audio books are fun, too.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"color: #000000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Century Gothic';font-size: small\"><span>Sing, too! Nursery rhymes, fingerplays, made-up songs, Elvis, opera\u2026. it\u2019s all good!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"color: #000000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Century Gothic';font-size: small\"><span>Play Simon Says (or Mommy\/Daddy Says!)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"color: #000000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Century Gothic';font-size: small\"><span>Play I Spy or other guessing games in which you and your child take turns giving each other clues.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"color: #000000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Century Gothic';font-size: small\"><span>When you are reading or telling a familiar story to your child, make a mistake, such as, \u201cWhen Goldilocks arrived at The Three Frogs\u2019 house, she went inside without knocking.\u201d See if your child catches your mistake! Be straight-forward: \u201cI am going to tell you what to do now. Ready?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"color: #000000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Century Gothic';font-size: small\"><span>Keep your directions\u00a0short and simple \u2013 preschoolers are not known for their extensive attention spans.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"color: #000000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Century Gothic';font-size: small\"><span>Use\u00a0visual cues if you can \u2014 point the direction you want him to go; touch her feet if you want her to get shoes on.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"color: #000000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Century Gothic';font-size: small\"><span>Ask your child to\u00a0repeat back the directions. My four-year-old likes to count on her fingers while she retells what she needs to do. Whatever works!<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"color: #000000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Century Gothic';font-size: small\"><span>Be predictable. If you always tell your child to first clear his plate, then wash his hands, he will have a better chance of remembering what to do.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"color: #000000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Century Gothic';font-size: small\"><span>Have\u00a0appropriate expectations. Don\u2019t give your child a three-step direction if you know she is not capable of remembering three steps. Break it down step-by-step until she is ready.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"color: #000000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Century Gothic';font-size: small\"><span>When possible,\u00a0give choices instead of commands. \u201cIt\u2019s time to clean-up. Would you like to start in your bedroom or the living room?\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"color: #000000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Century Gothic';font-size: small\"><span>Save the lengthy reasoning and lectures, such as \u201cYou need to clean up your toys because they are all over the floor and someone is going to step on them and get hurt or break your toy.\u201d Too many words = confused preschooler. Again, short and simple is the way to go.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"color: #000000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Century Gothic';font-size: small\"><span>Acknowledge good direction-following! A high-five, pat on the back, or thumbs up can be just what a busy preschooler needs to keep working on this skill.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"margin-top: 1.833em;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.611em;margin-left: 0px;font-weight: normal;font-size: 1.286em;line-height: 1.222em;text-align: center;padding: 0px\"><span style=\"color: #008000;padding: 0px;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Century Gothic';font-size: small\"><span>Making Directions Fun<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 1.571em;margin-left: 1.571em;padding: 0px\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Century Gothic';font-size: small\"><span>Scavenger hunts, treasure hunts, etc. with verbal clues.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Century Gothic';font-size: small\"><span>Draw simple pictures for everyday routines, such as getting ready in the morning. Have your child point to each picture and tell you the \u201cstory\u201d of this routine.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Century Gothic';font-size: small\"><span>Have fun with silly, unexpected directions: \u201cGo to the kitchen and quack like a duck!\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Century Gothic';font-size: small\"><span>Let your child have a turn being the direction-giver and you be the follower. Model good behavior!<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Century Gothic';font-size: small\"><span>When you cook together, talk about the steps. \u201cFirst, we pour in the flour. Then, we add the sugar.
