On Wednesday, we talked about the ocean, animals in the ocean, and the saltiness of the water.
During our whole group time, we graphed our favorite sea animals. This activity focused on the children’s math skills development…as well as our theme.
The children also got to experience the taste of the ocean. I explained to the children that the ocean may look beautiful and appear to taste good, but it is SUPER salty. I prepared cups with salty water for the children to try a sip of. We had a few brave volunteers try the salt water and let us know what they thought of it. They will most likely not ever forget that taste based on their reactions. 😉

This week we continued our water theme with a focus on the ocean!

This group used watercolors to paint over painter’s tape to make their initials. They used their fine motor skills to brush the watercolors all over the paper during this art experience.

In this group, the children had to close their eyes, reach into the bag, and pull out a crab {keeping the ocean/water theme} with a letter on it. They had to identify it, say the sound that it made, and come up with a name of something or someone that starts with that letter. The objective of this activity was to practice letter recognition and letter sounds.

This was a two part group…at the beginning of the day, the children made “sand” with sandy colored paint and a stringing sponge. After it dried {just in time for small groups}, the children made handprint crabs!

This month we are learning about water. For our art time, we brought the easel outside to paint with spray bottles. This was an excellent activity for fine motor development as the children had to squeeze and release the trigger on the spray bottles.
