Taste of Belgium visits Creative Tots

Taste of Belgium visits Creative Tots
by Lynn Carson

This Friday, we say “Thank You” to all the wonderful moms in the Creative Tots Family.   Jean-François will be on hand serving his “Gaufre de Liège” authentic Belgian waffle for all to enjoy!  Don’t miss this!  This year we are celebrating Creative Tots Mothers with a unique treat brought all the way from Belgium.  Originating from the city of Liège, these waffles are immensely popular throughout all of Europe and is is one of few products prepared to be eaten “on the go”. It is typically served in a paper wrapping and eaten with the hands…no plate or fork required.  The dough of the Liège waffle is sweeter and denser than “Belgian waffles” as we know them in the U.S. It is made from thick dough and coarse Belgian beet sugar.  A specialized cast iron press caramelizes the sugar on the outside, giving it a delightful sweetness.  Happy Mothers Day!

Making Our Own Gingerbread Friends

After reading the stories about all the different gingerbread friends throughout the month of December, it was time to try our hand at making our own.  We measured and mixed the ingredients, stirred and stirred, rolled the dough then cut them out.  We knew that the recipe said to cook them for a whole eight minutes, no more no less and NO PEEKING.  We put them in the oven, but when we looked to see if they were done…our gingerbread friends were GONE!  Our tray was empty.  We quickly put our coats on and began searching outside incase they had slipped out while we weren’t looking.  They were nowhere to be found!  After searching high and low, we finally found them hiding in our classroom.  Thank goodness the fox didn’t find them before we did!

This month we are living in Gingerbread Land!  This afternoon the children helped to make our very own gingerbread play dough.  We gathered around the table and took turns measuring and mixing all of the special ingredients together.  After all of the ingredients were poured into our bowl, each child had a turn to knead the dough together with their hands!  It was a messy but fun experience! snowman faces 094

pumpkinpie

more cooking today, this time . . . pumpkin pie!

We made Pumpkin Pie in a bag today!  The children helped to measure and pour all of the ingredients into our special plastic bag.  The best part was that after we zipped up the bag, everyone had a turn to mush and mix everything together with their hands!  It was so exciting for them to see what it felt like as they were mixing the cold pumpkin pudding.  To make the crust of the pie, the kids also crushed up graham crackers on the table.

The Early 3’s had so much fun today making pumpkin pie!  At snack time we put our graham crackers at the bottom of our cup for the crust, put our pumpkin pie mixture next, and then topped it off with some cool whip!

Cooking with children is a wonderful way to teach them the benefits of measuring, numbers and working as a group.

Cooking with children is a wonderful way to teach them the benefits of measuring, numbers and working as a group.

Today we worked together to make apple crisp!  We sat around the table and talked about how we use measuring cups to help us make different kinds of foods.  For our apple crisp recipe we measured flour, sugar, and baking powder and stirred it all together.  We sprinkled cinnamon and sugar on top of our crisp apples and put it in the oven to bake!  The kids loved the smell of our wonderful creation as we all sat and ate it for snack!

We encourage you to participate – Thank you for your comments. We love to hear from all of you!
